Hi, and welcome! I’m Amy, a 25-year-old economist, dachshund mom, fiancée, and lover of soft living with structure. I work in economic consulting by day, but my real joy lives somewhere between the scent of a clean apartment and the quiet thrill of getting my Excel formulas to work on the first try.
Home Economics is where I bring all of that together. It’s a space for people like me; people who crave beautiful things but want to understand the real cost behind them. People who enjoy a home that feels curated, without pretending money is no object. People who are trying to live well, think smartly, and feel at home financially, emotionally, and aesthetically.
At Home Economics, you can expect:
- Budget-aware lifestyle content: What I spend, what I save on, and where I think it’s worth splurging.
- Personal reflections from life in the bustling Johannesburg streets, where the skyline is as busy as my Teams Calendar.
- Wedding planning updates, because yes, I’m engaged! I’ll share the economics of modern love and the real numbers behind the champagne.
- Home & decor tips that balance luxury with logic.
- A touch of theory: I won’t overload you with models, but I will sneak in some behavioural insights, marginal thinking, and the occasional utility curve.
This blog is a soft rebellion against the idea that you have to either be effortlessly chic or financially responsible. Why not both?
Where I’m Writing From
I live in Johannesburg, surrounded by bustling streets, beautiful storefronts, overpriced coffee, and an endless stream of creative inspiration.
I’m engaged to Murray, a mechatronic engineer working at a startup that builds electric safari vehicles (yes, the irony of working in the getaway industry in the heart of Sandton isn’t lost on us). Our dachshund, Asta, rules the apartment with her tiny iron paws and plays a starring role in my daily life -expect to see her make a few guest appearances here too!
Whether you’re here to find ideas for your apartment, figure out how to plan a stylish wedding on a budget, or just get a behind-the-scenes look at the everyday life of a twenty-something economist, I’m so glad you’re here.
Thanks for stopping by. I hope this space feels a little like a well-made cappuccino: warm, thoughtful, and worth returning to.
With love & logic,
Amy
